How to read this book
A few notes to make the tour easier.
Every chapter follows the same shape
- An ordinary moment. A familiar action: flushing, tapping a card, opening a fridge.
- The immediate mechanism. What happens physically or digitally, right away.
- The complete journey. Where the resource, signal, or product came from, and where it goes next.
- The hidden workforce. The engineers, operators, technicians, inspectors, and regulators who make it work.
- The history. What people did before, what problem forced a change, and how the modern version came to be adopted everywhere.
- Standards and coordination. The codes, protocols, and regulations that let independent organizations work as one system.
- Maintenance. What has to be inspected, cleaned, calibrated, or replaced, and on what schedule.
- Failure modes. What goes wrong, how often, and what is built in to catch it.
- Scale. What the same system looks like serving one household versus an entire country.
- Trade-offs and what's next. Cost, equity, environmental impact, and where automation or new materials are already changing the picture.
- Back to the ordinary moment. A return to the opening scene, now harder to take for granted.
- The leap. A wider-angle close: what the world was like before this system, the human cost of its absence, the size of the jump it represents, and what your own day would look like the moment it stopped, so the ordinary thing reads as the achievement it actually is.
Most chapters also carry a real-world examples and recent developments section naming specific companies, facilities, and events, and every chapter ends with a short key takeaways list, a small glossary of the terms it introduced, and a sources and notes section.
Boxes and signs to watch for
Don't be confused: ... boxes untangle two things people commonly mix up, like a water main and a water meter, or a blackout and a brownout.
A "👉" at the end of a chapter points to the next one.
On numbers and certainty
Scale figures (gallons per day, number of plants, kilometres of pipe) are the kind of thing that shifts year to year and source to source. This book uses figures from named, current, official or academic sources and treats them as representative, not exact to the decimal. Where a historical claim is genuinely disputed, or a widely repeated story turns out to be a myth (the flush toilet was not invented by a man named Crapper), the text says so directly.
