Don't be confused: Hopper's influence on how people actually write software is underattributed relative to her name recognition. Many readers know Ada Lovelace's name as an early visionary of what a computing machine might someday do, and rightly so; see the chapter on scientists, inventors, and mathematicians for her work and Alan Turing's alongside it. Hopper is less widely known outside computing circles, yet the compiler she built and the language design philosophy she pushed for are the direct ancestors of nearly every high-level programming language written since, the actual layer of software that most working programmers touch every day.

Hopper also popularized, though she did not originate, the term "bug" for a technical fault, after a moth was found lodged in a relay of the Mark II in 1947 and taped into the operating log; the word for a glitch predates that incident by decades, but the story and the physical specimen made her name inseparable from it. Later in her career she became a well-known lecturer and teacher within the Navy and the wider computing world, famous for handing audiences a foot-long piece of wire to illustrate the maximum distance an electrical signal can travel in a nanosecond, a physical prop meant to make the abstract cost of computing delay concrete for people writing software far removed from the underlying hardware. She remained in the Navy on and off for the rest of her career, repeatedly recalled from retirement because of her expertise, and reached the rank of rear admiral (lower half) in 1985, one of very few women to hold flag rank at that time. She received the National Medal of Technology in 1991 and, posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco and adopted as an infant by a working-class couple in what became Silicon Valley. He dropped out of Reed College after one semester, kept auditing classes informally, worked briefly at the video game company Atari, and traveled to India in his early twenties on a spiritual pilgrimage before returning to California and co-founding Apple Computer in 1976 with the engineer Steve Wozniak, building the company's first successful product, the Apple II, largely on Wozniak's hardware design while Jobs supplied the business drive and, increasingly, a strong sense for what a computer's design and interface should feel like to use. After a visit to Xerox's research labs exposed Apple's engineers to an early graphical interface controlled by a mouse, Jobs pushed the idea into the Macintosh, released in 1984, which did more than any other single product to popularize the graphical interface for ordinary consumers, even though Xerox, not Apple, had built the underlying idea first. Out of Apple, Jobs founded a workstation company called NeXT and bought the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, renaming it Pixar; its 1995 film "Toy Story" was the first feature made entirely with computer animation. Bill Gates grew up in Seattle and, as a teenager at a private school there, met Paul Allen while both were learning to program on one of the few computer terminals available to students at the time. The company's defining early decision came in 1980, when IBM needed an operating system for its first personal computer and Microsoft, rather than building one from scratch, bought the rights to an existing system from a small Seattle firm and licensed it to IBM as MS-DOS, while keeping the right to license the same software to other computer makers. That non-exclusive licensing arrangement, more than any single piece of code Microsoft wrote, is what let the company's software become the standard across an entire industry of IBM-compatible machines rather than staying tied to IBM's own hardware. Windows, launched in 1985 and refined through several major versions over the following decade, and the Microsoft Office suite that followed it, gave Microsoft a dominant position in both operating systems and productivity software that lasted for decades. Windows' own graphical interface drew a lawsuit from Apple in 1988, which argued that Windows copied the visual "look and feel" Apple had built into the Macintosh; American courts ruled against Apple in the early 1990s, finding that Apple's own license agreements and the broader unavailability of copyright protection for a general interface style left it without a claim, a ruling that let Microsoft keep building on ground Steve Jobs believed Apple alone owned.

The foundation's vaccine funding, delivered largely through the global vaccine alliance Gavi, is credited by public health researchers with helping prevent millions of childhood deaths from preventable disease since 2000, even as some critics argue that a single private foundation wields outsized, largely unelected influence over global health policy and research priorities. In 2010 Gates and Warren Buffett launched the Giving Pledge, asking billionaires to commit most of their wealth to charitable causes. Gates and Melinda French Gates divorced in 2021, and Gates's documented meetings with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after Epstein's 2008 conviction, meetings Gates has said were limited to discussions of philanthropic funding, drew sustained public criticism and reporting; Gates has denied any deeper relationship, but the association is well enough documented in reputable reporting that this book records it rather than leaving it out. Tim Berners-Lee, born in London and educated in physics at Oxford, was working as a software contractor at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Switzerland, when he confronted a mundane but pervasive problem: thousands of researchers using incompatible computer systems needed a way to share and link documents across all of them. In March 1989 he circulated a proposal (his supervisor famously scrawled "vague but exciting" across the top of it) that became, over the following two years, the working core of the World Wide Web: HTML for writing linked documents, HTTP for transferring them, web addresses to locate them, and the first web browser and server, built and run on one of Steve Jobs's NeXT computers, the same machine line whose operating system later became the foundation of Apple's own software. The first website went live in August 1991.

The decision that did the most to shape what the Web became was not technical but was Berners-Lee's own: in 1993, at his urging, CERN placed the Web's underlying technology into the public domain, royalty-free, so that anyone could build a browser, a server, or a site without paying a license fee to CERN or to him personally. Rival hypertext systems being developed commercially around the same time carried licensing restrictions the Web never did, and many historians of computing point to that single choice, made deliberately rather than by accident, as the reason the open Web won out over its more closed alternatives and grew as fast as it did. Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium in 1994 to steward open standards for the technology he had given away, work that connects directly back to the foundational computing ideas covered in the chapter on scientists, inventors, and mathematicians, where Alan Turing's and Ada Lovelace's theoretical groundwork for computing itself is covered. He remains active through the World Wide Web Foundation and a later project called Solid, which tries to give individuals technical control over their own personal data rather than leaving it locked inside the databases of the large platforms built on top of his invention, and he has been an outspoken advocate for net neutrality, the principle that internet providers should treat all traffic equally rather than favoring some services over others.

Berners-Lee's own view of his creation's legacy has grown more complicated over time. In public statements and writing over the past decade, he has repeatedly criticized how a handful of large platforms have concentrated control over how people actually experience the open system he gave away, arguing that the same royalty-free openness that let the Web spread so widely also left it without any built-in defense against that later concentration. Whether an inventor's original act of generosity can be blamed for choices made by others decades afterward is a fair question this book leaves open rather than settling; what is not in question is that an overwhelming share of the sites and services in daily use worldwide, from news archives to banking portals to the tools used to research this book, exist on infrastructure Berners-Lee built and then declined to charge anyone to use.
